This essay builds on and reverses Cathy Caruth’s point of needing to re-examine trauma in literature through a close analysis of Gao Xingjian’s One Man’s Bible and Ma Jian’s Beijing Coma. This need to re-examine trauma in fiction arises as a result of continued effort and attempt to overcome the problem of representation of trauma. By appropriating Western concepts of trauma onto these two translated texts, an attempt is made at considering how trauma, arguably a universal language, may be represented in a more culturally-specific context.
